Data Center Decommissioning
Secure Data Center Decom Services with Certified IT Asset Disposition
Whether you are closing a facility, consolidating infrastructure, migrating to the cloud, or refreshing aging hardware, ARCOA provides secure data center decommissioning and data center decom services that protect your organization from unnecessary risk. We manage the entire process end to end—from equipment removal and secure transportation to data destruction, asset recovery, certified recycling, and comprehensive reporting—ensuring IT infrastructure is retired securely while sensitive data is protected, chain of custody is maintained, asset value is maximized, and complete documentation is delivered throughout the project.
Data Center Decommissioning Without the Risk
Data centers contain some of an organization’s most valuable technology assets and often store highly sensitive information. When equipment reaches the end of its lifecycle, simply removing hardware is only one part of the project. Organizations also need confidence that data has been handled securely, equipment has been tracked throughout the process, and retired assets have been managed responsibly.
ARCOA helps organizations simplify complex decommissioning projects by providing a structured IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) process backed by documented chain of custody, certified data destruction, asset remarketing, and environmentally responsible electronics recycling.
Whether your project involves a single server room or an entire data center, our goal is to provide a secure, organized process from beginning to end.
Our Data Center Decommissioning Process
Every project follows a documented process designed to protect assets while maintaining visibility from pickup through final reporting.
Project Planning
Every engagement begins with understanding your project requirements, timelines, equipment inventory, security requirements, and reporting needs. This allows our team to develop a decommissioning plan that aligns with your organization’s operational goals.
Secure Equipment Removal
Servers, storage systems, networking equipment, and supporting infrastructure are carefully removed and prepared for transport. Equipment is handled using procedures intended to protect both sensitive assets and any equipment that may retain resale value.
Chain of Custody
Once equipment is accepted by ARCOA, chain of custody begins. Assets are documented throughout the disposition process to help maintain accountability from pickup through final processing.
Asset Evaluation
Equipment is evaluated to determine condition, processing requirements, and potential remarketing opportunities. Devices that retain market value may be eligible for refurbishment or resale, while end-of-life equipment moves into certified recycling.
Data Destruction
Data-bearing devices are processed using methods designed to meet NIST Special Publication 800-88 media sanitization guidance. Depending on the device and customer requirements, this may include software-based sanitization or physical destruction. ARCOA also offers onsite data destruction for organizations whose security policies require media to be destroyed before leaving the facility.
Asset Recovery & Remarketing
When appropriate, equipment with remaining market value may be remarketed through ARCOA’s established resale channels. Asset recovery can help offset project costs while extending the useful life of eligible equipment.
Certified Electronics Recycling
Equipment that cannot be remarketed is processed through ARCOA’s certified electronics recycling program. Materials are directed through approved downstream recycling partners as part of a documented recycling process.
Final Documentation
At the conclusion of the project, customers receive documentation that reflects the services performed and supports internal recordkeeping and compliance requirements.

If your project includes specialized equipment, our team can discuss the appropriate disposition process during project planning.
Secure Data Destruction for Data Center Equipment
Data security remains one of the most important aspects of any data center decom project.
Many retired devices continue to store sensitive information even after they are removed from production. Servers, storage arrays, networking equipment, and other enterprise devices may contain proprietary business information, customer records, credentials, configuration files, or other confidential data.
ARCOA processes data-bearing devices using media sanitization methods aligned with NIST Special Publication 800-88. Depending on the media type and customer requirements, devices may undergo software-based sanitization or physical destruction. For organizations with heightened security requirements, onsite data destruction services are also available.
Throughout the process, ARCOA maintains documentation designed to support internal recordkeeping and audit requirements.
Maximize the Value of Retired IT Assets
Not every retired asset has reached the end of its useful life.
Enterprise servers, networking equipment, storage systems, and other hardware may still retain market value depending on age, specifications, and condition. When appropriate, ARCOA evaluates equipment for remarketing opportunities before directing non-recoverable assets into certified recycling.
This approach helps organizations:
- Recover value from eligible assets
- Offset portions of project costs
- Extend the useful life of technology
- Reduce unnecessary electronic waste
Certified Electronics Recycling
Equipment that cannot be remarketed is processed through ARCOA’s certified electronics recycling program.
ARCOA maintains multiple third-party certifications that support its electronics recycling and IT Asset Disposition services, including e-Stewards, RIOS, ISO 14001, and NAID AAA. These certifications reflect independently audited processes for environmental management, data destruction, operational quality, and responsible electronics recycling.
By combining certified recycling with documented chain of custody and reporting, ARCOA helps organizations responsibly manage end-of-life technology assets.
Learn MoreDocumentation Designed for Accountability
Documentation is an important part of every data center decommissioning project.
Depending on the services performed, customers may receive documentation that includes:
- Asset inventories
- Basic Audit Reports
- Hard Drive Audit Reports
- Mass Balance Reports
- Data destruction documentation
- Chain of custody records
These reports provide visibility into how equipment was processed and help organizations maintain records for internal governance and compliance programs.
